Chapter 12 -- (Summer)
I slowly opened my eyes to unfamiliar surroundings. I quickly popped my head up from the pillow, resting on my elbows and looked over to my side. There was Joe lying on his side sound asleep. That’s when I realized I was still at Joe’s apartment. I slowly rested my head back on the pillow. I raised his bed sheets and looked down at my naked body.
“Oh my God.” I whispered.
I can’t believe it. I had sex last night. Oh my gosh. I have to go. I have to go home. Autumn is probably worried to death about me. I sat up holding his bed sheets against my bare chest, searching his room with my eyes for my clothes.
I started to move off his bed when I heard him say in a groggy voice, “Hey…g’morning beautiful.”
Startled, I snapped my head back to look down at him. Pushing a few strands behind my ear I smiled shyly saying, “Good morning.”
“Going somewhere?” he asked with a smile.
I laughed nervously. “Joe…I uh…I have to go.”
Joe took a deep breath and stretched as he sat up next to me. “Really?” he asked now really starting to wake up.
“Im sorry.” I said as I moved off his bed still holding his bed sheets against my naked body. I reached for my clothes on his bedroom floor.
“Are you in some sort of a rush or something? I mean…can I fix you something to eat or anything?” Joe asked slightly confused at my actions.
I just felt the urge and needed to quickly leave and go home. I grabbed my clothes and rushed toward his small bathroom in his bedroom. Before closing the door, I looked at him and asked, “Can you just please take me home?”
Joe had a look of sadness and confusion all at once. He then slowly nodded at me. “Yeah, of course.”
I stood in his bathroom just staring at myself in the mirror for what seem like eternity. It was as if I could see my sister Autumn staring back at me with an evil sneer on her face. I quickly turned the water faucet on at the sink and splashed water into my face soaking the edges of my hair line. I looked back up into the mirror starring at my face which was now soaked with water. I looked like I had the emotion of pain written all over my face. Pain of regret. I felt like I had turned into my sister for the night by having sex with Joe. But it was all in fun, right? He cares about me. What was scary about it was that I didn’t remember when we fell asleep. I only remembered him lying on top of me.
The wine. Was I drunk?
My thoughts were abruptly interrupted when I heard a loud knock at the bathroom door.
“Summer? Are you okay in there?” It was Joe on the other side of the door.
I looked at the closed door without responding.
“Summer?” Joe called out to me sounding a little more panicked.
I looked down at myself and realized I had been standing there in his bathroom naked. I finally snapped out of my somber mood and started to put my clothes back on.
“Summer!” Joe yelled.
“Im okay. Im coming out.” I said now rushing as I put my clothes on.
“Okay.” Joe said in an uncertain tone. “Uhm…can I get you something? Do you need anything? Are you okay?”
I looked in the mirror and ran my fingers thru my hair trying to look presentable now that I was fully dressed. Even though I was wearing waterproof mascara, I felt I still needed to refresh my makeup.
I yelled to Joe on the other side of the door saying, “Joe, is my purse out there?”
“I’ll check.” I heard Joe say.
There was a long pause as I waited to hear back from him. I continued to try to make myself look presentable until I heard Joe come back to the door.
“Babe, your purse is not here. You must have left it in my car.”
Damn.
“Do you want me to go get it? Is everything okay?”
I took a deep breath and smiled at myself in the mirror to practice my happiness to Joe. I then turned and finally opened the door with a smile. There was Joe standing there wearing a black t-shirt with ‘The Beatles’ logo spread across the front, and dark blue jeans.
“I told you…everything is fine. Are you ready to go?” I then walked passed him and walked toward his living room.
Joe followed me as he continued to wear a confused expression on his face. “Summer, are you sure everything is okay? Are you regretting what happened last night?”
I turned to look at him. “No. Not at all.”
For some reason, I didn’t quite believe myself.
“May I ask why the hurry to get out of here?”
I laughed nervously and shyly looked away from him. “Im sorry. I guess…” I paused to look back at him. “…I guess I don’t know what or how things are supposed to work when something like what we did….happens.”
I felt so embarrassed and felt like I was a child trying to explain my actions for doing something wrong. Joe smiled and sighed what sounded like a relief. He walked up to me and grabbed my hand in comfort. “Well…you don’t just run out on the guy.” He chuckled.
I nervously laughed back as I pushed a few strands behind my ear.
“Geez…you’re making me feel like this is a one night stand scenario or something. That’s not the plan is it? Because it would be kind of weird considering the fact that we have class tomorrow and for the rest of the week…or should I say semester. Know what I mean?” he smiled his perfect smile.
I giggled. “Yeah…I guess you’re right. But no…this is definitely not a one night stand thing.”
He gazed into my eyes. “Good,” He said confidently.
“But I should still probably get home.” I said thinking of Autumn.
He brought my hands up to his lips and kissed them. He then said softly, “Okay, sweetie.”
“Oh my God.” I whispered.

Joe's Car
He escorted me out to his car holding my hand with our fingers intertwined together. Once again, he knew how to make me feel so comfortable around him. He opened the car door for me but stopped me before I got into the car. He trapped me between himself and the open car door.
“Can I ask you something?” he asked.
I nodded yes wondering into his eyes.
“Promise me you wont get upset.”
I furrowed my eyebrows now more curious as to what he had to say.
“Promise?” he asked once again with a smirk.
I smiled. “Okay. I promise.”
“Well let me just say this before we go any further.” He paused and continued, “…last night was…awesome. You totally caught me by surprise. Im almost thinking that you were using some sort of tactic.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
He gazed into my eyes as if he were searching for something.
He then finally responded, “You’re not really a virgin, huh?”
I frowned. “Yes I am. Well…not anymore.”
“I mean…you didn’t…move…like one.” He hesitated.
I continued to frown at him.
“I mean…a virgin…wouldn’t…well…” he stopped and thought for a moment as he looked away. He then brought his eyes back up to me. “Well…you know what? Nevermind. I’ll get your purse for you.” He smiled and kissed my cheek and walked toward the trunk of his car.
Now I was left confused. I continued to watch him as he grabbed my purse from out of the trunk of his car. He held it up for me to see. “See! Remember when we went to the movies, you asked me if you could leave it in my trunk?”
My eyes followed him as he walked around to the driver side of the car and hopped in. I slowly hopped into the car beside him. He handed me my purse and started the car driving it off into the direction to my apartment.
I sighed as i tried to figure out what Joe was trying to say. “Did you not enjoy yourself last night?” I said feeling very uncomfortable looking down at my hands fumbling with the strap of my purse in my lap.
He reached over and touched my leg. “No, no…im not saying that at all. I have absolutely no regrets. You just…took me by surprise. That’s all.”
“Why?” I asked still not making eye contact with him.
I could feel his eyes burn into me even though he was driving.
“I don’t know. You uhm…” Joe paused again.
It was as if he wanted to say more but didn’t know how to say it. Perhaps he was sparing my feelings.
“You were awesome, Summer. That’s all.”
I finally looked over at him and saw him smiling, forcing a smile upon my face.
At that moment, his cell phone started to ring. Joe reached for his phone while keeping the other hand on the wheel of the car. He answered the phone saying, "Josh…what’s up?”
There was a pause.
"Josh, I don’t know where Shane is. He never came home last night or this morning. Im sure he will be around sometime today.”
I figured he must have been speaking to Shane's brother, Josh he had told me about last night.
“…Well how much does he owe you?” Joe paused. “Alright, look…I will try to give him a call and if I still don’t hear from him I will give you the money.” Joe paused and ended the call. He then said to me, “Sorry about that. Shane always seem to owe his brother Josh some money. Josh sounds pretty upset. “I better call Shane…because soon he will have to owe me money if I have to pay Josh.” Joe said as he proceeded to dial Shane’s phone number and pull to a stop at a red light.
Within the next instant a ringing noise came from inside my purse. Joe quickly looked at me and then down at my purse. It was a ringing noise I wasn’t familiar with. It sounded like a cell phone with a distinct ring tone.
“Is that your phone?” Joe asked with a puzzled look on his face as he continued to hold his phone up to his ear.
I searched inside my purse and pulled out the ringing phone. It was a phone I had never seen before. I looked at the screen to read the caller id. It read: Joe. I immediately looked up at Joe in shock.
Joe frowned as he slowly lowered his phone down from his ear. He ended the call, and with that…the phone in my hands stopped ringing. Joe stared at me speechless.
He then finally spoke. “What the hell are you doing with Shane’s cell phone?”
“Can I ask you something?” he asked.
I nodded yes wondering into his eyes.
“Promise me you wont get upset.”
I furrowed my eyebrows now more curious as to what he had to say.

Chapter 13 -- (Summer)
Joe's Car
Joe glared at me with a suspicious eye while I stared at him in shock.
So many thoughts were running thru my head. Why would I have Shane’s cell phone? How did it get in my purse? There was only one answer to my questions.
Autumn.
I closed my eyes tightly as if I had felt a sharp pain in my body. It might as well have been my sister Autumn, stabbing me in the back. How could she do this to me? Did she purposely place his phone in my purse hoping to mess things up with me and Joe? She is such a bitch!
I looked over at Joe who appeared to be waiting impatiently for my response. Before I had a chance to respond, the sound of someone laying on their horn interrupted our intense stares. Someone was honking their horn at Joe for him to go since the traffic light had turned green.
Joe stepped on the gas pedal and accelerated forward. “Is there something you need to tell me, Summer?” Joe said as if he were trying to stay calm.
“Yes.” I said softly.
He quickly snapped his head to look over at me. “Something about you and Shane?” he said in shock yet with a frown on his face.
“No. Joe, please let me explain. Just….just hear me out.”
Now was the time I realized that I needed to come clean about having a twin sister. Although now would seem like a lame excuse, but he had no choice but to believe me…right?
“Alright, Im listening.” Joe said adjusting himself almost sinking down into his seat as he kept his right hand on the wheel and his left hand raised to his chin.
“I know this may sound crazy because I am telling you this at a time like now, but…I have a sister.”
Joe looked over at me with a blank expression.
I continued, “She is the only family I have, so I put up with a lot of her shenanigans because Im all she’s got, and she’s all I’ve got. “
Joe looked from the road and back to me. He then asked, “Ok, what does this have to do with you having Shane’s cell phone, Summer?”
“That’s what Im trying to tell you, Joe. My sister must have been with Shane and somehow, someway…got his cell phone as well.”
Joe looked at me as if he wasn’t sure if he could believe my story.
“I know you probably don’t believe me…but you have to.”
Moments later we finally arrived at my apartment building pulling into the parking garage. Once Joe parked the car, we both sat there in silence.
“So…” Joe finally said breaking the silence, “…what you’re telling me is that, Shane and your sister hooked up and she placed his cell phone in your purse.”
I nodded yes.
“Can I be honest?”
I kept my eyes on him waiting for him to continue.
“That doesn’t sound like Shane at all. I mean…his cell phone is his everything. He would never just leave it around for –“
“You don’t know my sister. She is very manipulative.” I said cutting Joe off.
Joe remained silent as he stared at me wondering if I were telling the truth.
“Do I have a reason to lie? Joe, I love you. I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize this relationship that we have.”
Joe stared at me with a blank stare.
I started to get angry and frustrated with Autumn.
I smacked my teeth and opened the car door. “If you don’t believe me…come upstairs and meet her for yourself.” I started to get out but stopped when I noticed Joe didn’t move. I looked back at him and gestured with my head saying, “Come on.”
“I believe you.” I heard him say as I got out of his car and slammed his door shut.
I walked around the car to hear him quickly get out of his car.
“Summer, I said I believe you.” He said with apologetic eyes.
I walked up to him and grabbed his arm. “Just, come on.” I said leading him away from his car.

Apartment Building
I exit the elevator and walked down the hall as Joe followed me. I prayed silently for two things. One-that my neighbor Nick was nowhere to be seen, and Two- Autumn would be around to tell Joe what she really did without her being an ass about it.
I took a deep breath as I entered my house key into the keyhole. I could feel Joe’s presence right behind me. I was nervous. Once I heard the door unlock, I turned to look back at Joe who had his hands in his jeans pocket with his head down as if he were staring at my legs. “By the way,” I said forcing him to lift his eyes and look me in the face, “…her name is Autumn…and she’s my twin sister.”
Joe raised his eyes brows in shock.
I opened the door and walked inside.
“Autumn!?” I yelled loudly waiting for her to come out into the living room as we entered inside.
I closed the door shut once Joe stepped inside. I noticed how he observed my apartment while keeping his hands inside his jeans pocket. I walked past him and made my way into my bedroom looking for Autumn.
“Autumn?!” I continued to look for her in the bathroom, however she was nowhere to be found.
I walked back into the living room and peeked in the kitchen…still no Autumn. I now felt disappointed. I wondered where she was at this time of the morning.
I slowly turned my attention to Joe who was staring right at me. “I guess she’s not here.”
Joe shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe her and Shane are together right now.”
I smiled briefly. “Maybe.”
I was trying to hold my anger inside. I couldn’t believe Autumn would even be in contact with Shane. How would she have known who he was? How did they even get together? My eyes drifted over to the table where there was a picture of Autumn and I when we were kids. I walked over to pick it up and showed it to Joe.
“See.” I then pointed out who was who in the picture with my index finger. “…that’s Autumn and that’s me. We were eleven years old.”
Joe smiled as he looked down at the picture he was now holding in his hands. “Very cute. I can’t believe you’re a twin. Why didn’t you ever tell me?” He then looked up at me with a pleasant expression.
I shyly smiled and looked away. “I don’t know.”
“What happened to your family? In the car you said that your sister was all that you had and vice versa. Did something happen to your family?”
My smile slowly faded. I then took the picture away from Joe and replaced it on the table.
“Our parents died in a car accident. My other family members just couldn’t take care of us. No one was there for us. Autumn started to rebel because of frustration. The family thought she was too much to handle and thought we were too much of a burden. So, we just had to be there for each other.” I said almost on the verge of tears thinking about our past.
Joe stepped up to me and gave me a heartfelt hug. He whispered, “Baby, Im so sorry to hear about your parents. No one should have to go thru that.”
I then pulled away from him saying thank you.
“I would love to meet your sister Autumn.” Joe said holding on to my hands.
To know that Autumn wasn't here, I had to admit I was relieved. But Joe, however, still wants to meet her. I started to retrack my thoughts of Joe meeting Autumn.
“I don’t know Joe. Autumn is a little on the crazy side…and sometimes I just like to write her out of my life.”
He stared at me intently. “But why?”
“If you met her, you would understand.”
“Oh..kay…will I get to make that decision for myself? Will I ever meet her?”
‘I hope not’ is how I wanted to respond. But I figured I had said enough.
“Maybe.” I smiled at him.
“Cool.” He smiled back as he pulled me close to him.
I could tell he wanted to kiss me by the way he gazed down at my lips and stepped closer. I suddenly started to feel uncomfortable and nervous. He leaned into me and sure enough he planted a kiss onto my lips as I felt his hands wrap around my waist.
Why was I so nervous. I didn’t feel comfortable kissing him like I should have. Something was different. Was it him? Was it me?
I pulled away from him and grabbed his hands away from my waist. “Joe…” I said softly as I gently rejected his affection toward me.
“What’s wrong?” he asked with a puzzled expression.
“Uhm…I think you should probably leave now.”
Joe cocked his head to the side as if he were confused by my statement. “I thought maybe I could stick around and wait for your sister and Shane to come back or something?”
I looked around to see where I laid Shane’s cell phone down. It was on the kitchen counter that separated the kitchen from the living room. I walked toward the phone and handed it to Joe.
“Here. Maybe you should take this with you. I have a strong feeling that if Autumn comes back home she will be alone.”
Not reaching for the phone Joe responded, “But what if she comes back with Shane…?”
“Fine. Then...I will just give it back to him.” I said slightly annoyed holding on to Shane’s phone.
“Are you okay?” Joe asked.
I rolled my eyes and turned away to walk towards the front door and held it open for Joe to leave. “Im fine, Joe. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”
Joe stood there for a second as if he were registering what I had just said. He then rubbed the top of his head flattening his short crop hair style with his hand and took a deep breath. He walked toward the door and stopped right in front of me. “Tell Shane to give me a call if he decides to come around.”
I smiled. “Okay.”
He leaned forward to kiss my lips, but I turned my head wanting him to kiss my cheek. He paused when he saw me turn my head, however he proceeded to kiss my cheek.
“See you tomorrow in class.” He said softly and walked out.
“Okay, bye.” I responded and closed the door shut.
I thought about Autumn. She must be hiding somewhere. I know she wouldn’t be out and about this early in the morning. She couldn’t be.
I marched my way back into my bedroom and looked under the bed. “Autumn!” I called out to her.
No one under the bed.
I walked to my closet and opened the door. Only our clothes and shoes occupied the space inside.
I marched into the bathroom and abruptly pulled the shower curtain back.
No Autumn.
I marched back into the living room and almost jumped out of my skin when I saw Autumn standing at the front door with her arms folded in front of her chest and wearing a smirk on her face. She stood there with one leg crossed in front of the other wearing a gray tee shirt that hung off her shoulders and blue jean cut off shorts. She looked down at my hand and saw that I was holding Shane’s cell phone.
“So there’s that guy’s phone. I was wondering what happened to it.” She giggled.
“You bitch! Where is Shane?”
She briefly frowned and then smirked as she adjusted her black framed eye glasses and boosted herself off away from the door walking towards me. “What do you mean?”
“How did Shane’s cell phone get into my purse, Autumn?”
Autumn made a quick turn into the kitchen grabbing a glass from the cabinet. “Want some orange juice?” “Where have you been Autumn?”
“I’ll take that as a no.” Autumn said ignoring me as she turned to the refrigerator grabbing a carton of orange juice.
“Answer me!” I shouted angrily at her as I stood by the counter.
She calmly poured the juice into her glass and took a sip of orange juice as she looked up at me thru top of her eye glasses. “Geez. Are you on the rag or something? Why so pissy this morning?”
I closed my eyes out of frustration. “I can’t do this anymore.”
“Do what?” Autumn asked calmly.
“This!” I exclaimed holding my hands out. “You! I can’t deal with you anymore! You almost ruined everything with Joe and I.”
I then paused and thought for a moment. Joe had just left, did she run into him out in the hall? I guess she read the panicked look on my face and answered my question.
“Relax. You’re little boy toy didn’t see me.”
I sighed a silent sigh of relief. “Where’s Shane, Autumn?” I asked thru my teeth.
Autumn paused and stared at me. She then smiled. She walked up close to me and looked at me up and down. “You had sex last night.”
I backed away from her and frowned. “What?!”
How did she know?
“Have fun?” she sneered.
“Autumn, will you just answer the damn question! What did you do to Shane?”
Autumn smirked as she took another sip of her orange juice. “Relax.” She then walked into the living room and turned on the television. “He’s in a safe place….for now.”
“What? What are you talking about?" Before giving Autumn a chance to respond, I continued in a fit of anger, "Dammit Autumn! That’s it. Im so done with you!” I placed Shane’s phone on the kitchen counter. “I don’t think so, my dear.” Autumn said coldly as she sat on the sofa.
“Oh, I think so.” I demanded. “You need to get your bags and leave. You keep fucking up my life, and Im done!” I rushed toward the closet in the living room where I knew Autumn’s luggage were in.
Just as I was about to turn the knob, I could hear Autumn say, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
I ignored her and opened the door. I immediately screamed when I saw Shane’s pale lifeless body fall forward and on top of me as we both fell to the hard wooden floor with a thud. I screamed in disgust and fear all at once as I struggled to remove Shane’s shirtless dead weight body off of me.
“AUTUMN!” I screamed for her to help me. However, even if she wanted to help me I had already rolled Shane’s cold pale body off of me. My eyes quickly welled up with tears as I tried to calm myself. I looked over at Autumn who was now standing up holding her glass of orange juice.
She smiled saying, “Surprise!”
